Finding the Edge
A contour drawing is an artistic technique where you render a subject exclusively through outlines and edges to capture its form, mass, and volume without using shading or tone.
• Standard Contour: You look at both the subject and the paper, moving your pencil slowly along visible edges and dramatic plane changes.
• Blind Contour: You draw the object while strictly avoiding looking at your paper, which trains your brain to trust observation over logical symbols.
• Continuous Line: You keep your pen or pencil on the page for an unbroken line from start to finish.
• Cross-Contour: You use curving lines that map across the interior and exterior surfaces to emphasize a three-dimensional, rounded form.
Benefits of Practice
• Hand-Eye Coordination: Synchronizes the speed of your eye with the movement of your hand.
• Pure Observation: Forces you to see shapes and proportions accurately rather than drawing what you think an object looks like.
• Focus and Flow: Helps you break down complex subjects into manageable edges and lines.
